Moroccan artist Chama Mechtaly is building aesthetic bridges.
“Mechtaly’s concept for Moors and Saints came out of her experience in Dubai. She wanted to continue a mission she had embarked on through painting in a “language of luxury goods and fine jewelry,” she says. This could bring dialogue and reconciliation and highlight the shared history between Jews and Muslims in the region without threatening or offending anyone, she says. The idea involved blending Jewish and Islamic themes, such as a Magen David inspired by jewelry models on Al-Azhar Mosque in Cairo.”

Set up in 2019 by Chama Mechtaly, all of the pieces are handmade in Dubai using 18 carat gold, sterling silver along with precious and semi-precious stones. Dubai-based Moors & Saints takes inspiration from Andalusia and Morocco’s Moorish design and architecture and traces its journey all the way to India and Mexico. This translates into the brand’s geometric pieces which are ethically-crafted in Dubai using fine materials such as 18-carat gold, sterling silver as well as precious and semi-precious stones.

“I studied international relations and conflict resolution in Boston and came to Dubai after working in diplomacy and refugee advocacy,” Chama tells MOJEH. “This collection of experiences led me to start a brand that promotes tolerance, pluralism and cross-cultural understanding in the world.”

“Many Muslim Moroccans viewing Mechtaly’s work assumed the women were Muslim, and commented on their beauty and their perceived resemblance to their relatives. They were often surprised upon learning that the women in Mechtaly’s paintings are Jewish. Through her work, Mechtaly wants to show that Muslim Moroccans and some Jewish communities have common roots, challenging the idea she was brought up with: that the Jewish people are ‘other.’”

שאמה משתאלי, מומחית מרוקאית ליחסי יהודים וערבים ומקימת הסטארטפ "Moors & Saints" שפועל מדובאי מספרת על כך שבמהלך האירועים האלימים במסגד אל-אקצא במהלך חודש מאי. "בכירים רבים במדינות שהצטרפו להסכמי אברהם חשו תסכול רב ממה שקורה במסגד. העניין הזה הוא קריטי ממש. ישראל צריכה להגביל את הפעילות האלימה של המשטרה במקומות הקדושים ולשמור עליהם היטב. גם הסוגיה הפלסטינית היא חשובה מאוד וצריך למנוע הדרדרות ולכלול את הפלסטינים ביוזמות כלכליות ודיפלומטיות, על מנת לא לפגוע בגשרים הקיימים", אומרת משתאלי.

“Il y a une envie chez Chama Mechtaly d’agir sur l’existant et d’enclencher la préservation du patrimoine, à la fois dans sa globalité et sa diversité. Cette artiste peintre extériorise ses idées profondément liées au Maroc pluriel à travers une exposition unique en son genre qui se tient depuis le 1er juillet au complexe culturel de Sidi Belyout. Elle met sa palette très colorée aussi bien au service de la peinture que de son identité.
